Photo Journal: Ready to sweep the year clean

Brooms are crafted at a workshop in the city of Shiojiri, Nagano Prefecture, to be ready for year-end housecleaning. Broom corns, which were reaped in autumn, are weaved manually at the site, where various brooms are hung to dry. The local brooms, whose head is long and soft, are suitable to clean tatami mats and flooring. The 80-centimeter long brooms are priced at around 10,000 yen and are popular. Craftsman Motonao Yonezawa said, "I hope people will use the handmade brooms for year-end housecleaning." (Mainichi)
