Photo Journal: Dainty decorations

Two women work on "lucky charm" paper decorations in preparation for the new year in Miyako, Iwate Prefecture, in this recent photo. The charms, which are made of traditional Japanese paper, are typically displayed near household altars when ringing in the new year. A total of approximately 600 sheets are planned to be produced by the end of the year, with auspicious images such as treasure ships and the seven gods of good fortune. (Mainichi)
