Japan defense ministry to request funds for long-range cruise missiles

Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera (Mainichi)

Japan's Defense Ministry is to request extra budget funds to introduce long-range cruise missiles for Air Self-Defense Force (ASDF) fighter planes, Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera revealed at a Dec. 8 news conference.

"The equipment will enable (the ASDF) to remove the threat of attack," the minister stated, explaining that it would be used in the event of an amphibious invasion of Japan. "The equipment is not designed to attack enemy bases and it does not go against the concept of exclusively focusing on defense," he added.

The ministry is set to officially make the request for funds by adding the item to the fiscal 2018 budget draft.
