OBERSTDORF, Germany (Kyodo) -- Sara Takanashi and Yuki Ito are among skiers who are guaranteed Olympic berths, despite the cancellation of January's World Cup event in Romania, which was announced by the International Ski Federation on Thursday.
Takanashi and Ito were scheduled to compete at the Jan. 6-7 event in Rasnov, Romania, but it was called off due to lack of snow.
Takanashi is aiming for a 54th World Cup title, one better than Austrian men's ski jumper Gregor Schlierenzauer, whose record she tied in February. Earlier this month, she finished third at two World Cup events and won the inaugural women's World Cup team event with Ito, Kaori Iwabuchi, and Yuka Seto.
The next women's World Cup events will take place in Sapporo on Jan. 13-14, followed by the Jan. 18-21 meet in Zao in Yamagata Prefecture.
Takanashi and Ito have already met the selection criteria set by the Ski Association of Japan through other World Cup events. The association will name the skiers who earned spots on Japan's Winter Olympic team on Jan. 11.
