Photo Journal: Here comes the sun

The first sunrise of 2018 is seen behind Mount Fuji from a special All Nippon Airways (ANA) New Year flight on the morning of Jan. 1. This year was the 18th the airline has arranged the flight taking passengers to see the year's first sunrise. ANA Flight 2018 departed from Tokyo's Haneda Airport at 5:31 a.m. with 168 passengers on board. At about 6:50 a.m., as the Boeing 787-8 plane was flying at an attitude of roughly 4,000 meters above the Nagano Prefecture city of Komagane, delighted passengers caught a glimpse of the first rays of light, which they captured on smartphones and cameras. "Other airlines hold New Year's flights, too, but of all the companies, we pick the spot closest to Mount Fuji where people can admire the sunrise, flying at an altitude of around 3,960 meters, around 200 meters higher than Mount Fuji," ANA President Yuji Hirako said in a greeting.
