Photo Journal: Bright hope for restoration

Passengers sit on a JR Hitahikosan Line train -- which is lit up with festive illumination to promote restoration of the area hit hard by July 2017 heavy rain in northern Kyushu -- on Jan. 12, 2018. This train had been left at Daigyoji Station in the village of Toho, Fukuoka Prefecture, because the tracks were covered by soil washed away by the torrential rain. The line's section between Soeda Station in the town of Soeda, Fukuoka Prefecture, and Yoake Station in the city of Hita, Oita Prefecture, including Daigyoji Station, has been closed since the disaster, and the carriages were transported to a factory for an examination in October last year. The illuminated train is making one round trip a day on a temporary basis between Tagawagotoji Station in the city of Tagawa, Fukuoka Prefecture, and Jono Station in Kitakyushu on Fridays and Saturdays until Jan. 27.
