Photo Journal: Crystal cliffhanger

Water is frozen into curtains of icicles along a cliff face in Chichibu, Saitama Prefecture, in this recent photo. The phenomenon is called the "Misotsuchi no tsurara," and according to the Otaki branch of the Chichibu tourism association, it can reach a width of about 50 meters during very cold periods. If it rains and the weather gets cold again, the icicles will become even thicker. The ice will be illuminated nightly until Feb. 12. (Mainichi)
