Photo Journal: Cool catch

Visitors prepare to fish for Japanese "wakasagi" smelt on the frozen surface of Akagi Onuma lake in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture, on Jan. 14, 2018. During this time of the year when the air temperature reaches roughly minus 10 degrees Celsius, the lake, located at an altitude of some 1,300 meters, is covered with a sheet of ice 20 to 30 centimeters thick. Putting up tents to protect them from the wind, the hopefuls dip fishing lines into 10-centimeter wide holes drilled into the ice. The lake was previously known as an ice skating location, but now, it is filled with visitors from throughout the Kanto region ready to try their hand at catching the smelt as the weekend rolls around.
