The top candidate for bearing the Japanese flag for the Pyeongchang Olympic Games is Nordic ski jumper Noriaki Kasai, sources close to the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) disclosed on Jan. 15.

The Winter Games to be held in South Korea next month will be the 45-year-old Kasai's eighth appearance at the games, and the JOC is currently progressing with down-to-the-wire negotiations with the Ski Association of Japan.

Women's speed skater Nao Kodaira, 31, is expected to be chosen as the captain of the Japanese team.
