Photo Journal: New dawn dedication

A group of young Shinto priests and priestesses are seen in freezing cold water to purify their bodies and souls near Shobutahama beach in Shichigahama, Miyagi Prefecture, just before sunrise on Jan. 20, 2018. The traditional ablution ritual is performed around the coldest part of winter. About 20 priests and priestesses -- the men clad in loincloths and women in white attire -- entered the sea in prayer for local recovery from the devastation caused by the March 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami.
