Sochi Olympic speed skater Sumiyoshi found dead in home

NAGANO -- Speed skater and 2014 Sochi Olympic Japanese athlete Miyako Sumiyoshi was found dead in her home here on Jan. 20, it was announced on Jan. 23 by Lawson Inc. to which she belonged.

    The skater was 30. Her cause of death and other details have not been made public. The Olympian's wake and funeral will be held privately along with the wishes of her family.

    Sumiyoshi originally hails from Kushiro, Hokkaido. She was in the same year at Shinshu University as speed skater Nao Kodaira who has been named as a member for the Japanese team at the Pyeongchang Olympics. Sumiyoshi placed 14th in the women's 500 meters and 22nd in the women's 1000 meters in Sochi, where she appeared with Kodaira. She was not selected in December 2017 for a place on the Japanese team for the upcoming Olympics.
