Elementary school teacher suspended, resigns over repeated corporal punishment

TOYOHASHI, Aichi -- An elementary school teacher here resigned on Feb. 9 after being given a six-month suspension for repeatedly administering corporal punishments to nine children.

"I deeply regret that I was too enthusiastic in my instruction," the 43-year-old second-grade teacher at the Toyohashi municipal Iwanishi Elementary School was quoted as saying.

According to the Aichi Prefectural Board of Education, last October the teacher grabbed the back of a girl's head and repeatedly smashed her forehead into the blackboard during a math class after she gave a wrong answer. The student was absent from school for about two weeks following the incident.

An education board investigation found that the teacher had administered corporal punishment on multiple occasions against a total of nine children from April through October 2017, including hitting their heads with rulers and pinching their cheeks. He also forbade the students from speaking about the penalties.

The teacher had been reprimanded by the board in August 2012 for the corporal punishment of a fourth-grade student of foreign nationality.
