GSDF helicopter parts break off possibly during Osaka flight

YAO, Osaka -- Two metallic rivet heads on a Ground Self-Defense Force (GSDF) helicopter broke off possibly during a recent flight, GSDF Camp Yao announced on Feb. 18.

It is thought that the rivet heads, which have not been found within Camp Yao, may have detached and fallen to the ground on Feb. 17, when the UH-1J multipurpose helicopter flew over the Osaka prefectural cities of Yao and Higashiosaka.

According to the camp's public relations office, the two rivet heads were among five fastening a landing ski to cushioning at the base of the aircraft. Each rivet head is 8 millimeters across, 1.5 millimeters thick, and weighs about 0.4 grams.

The landing skis, which help the helicopter land on snowy terrain, were attached on Jan. 22. The chopper is part of the GSDF's 3rd Aviation unit, attached to the force's 3rd Division.
