FUKUOKA -- Police sent documents to prosecutors on a young sumo wrestler on suspicion of sexually assaulting a girl in Fukuoka Prefecture during the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament in November 2016, it has been learned.
According to sources involved in the investigation, the girl, a teenager at the time, reported the incident to police. Fukuoka Prefectural Police investigated the case on a voluntary basis and sent papers to prosecutors in January this year. The wrestler, who was also in his teens at the time, claims that their actions were carried out with the girl's consent.
Asked to comment on the allegations, a representative of the Japan Sumo Association stated, "We can't say anything at this time."
