Photo Journal: Recovered smiles

Students smile during a ceremony designed to mark the reopening of municipal schools at a building housing Iitate Junior High School and three elementary schools, as well as a new child care facility in the village of Iitate, Fukushima Prefecture, on April 1, 2018. An evacuation order for the village, which had been in place due to the Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant disaster in 2011, was partially lifted in March 2017. The lifting of the order led to the reopening of the four schools, after a seven-year hiatus, as well as the construction of the new child care facility on the site. Most of the approximately 100 students and children will commute to the facility by bus from outside the village, where they continue living as evacuees. (Mainichi)
