Photo Journal: Bittersweet blossoms

Cherry trees in full bloom are seen on April 4, 2018, on a road at the site of Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO's) Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant in Okuma, Fukushima Prefecture, which is being decommissioned following the March 2011 disaster. Before the accident, about 1,200 cherry trees were planted on the premises of the facility by retired TEPCO workers and cherry blossom viewing parties used to be held with local residents. After the disaster, many of the trees were cut down as part of decontamination efforts. Today, only about 400 trees remain, mostly on this road which runs for approximately 1 kilometer. Cherry blossoms along this road, which was paved to prevent rainwater soaking into the soil, make workers feel the coming of spring, amid the sad scenery where huge tanks containing treated water are lined up.
