Photo Journal: Fish out of water

Young sweetfish leap upstream as their silver scales sparkle on the Tama River in Kawasaki. The river runs between Tokyo and Kanagawa prefectures into Tokyo Bay. Near the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's Bureau of Waterworks' Chofu diversion weir, about 13 kilometers above the mouth of the river, young sweetfish, up to 6 centimeters in length, can be seen heading further upstream. The number of sweetfish in the area was previously dramatically decreasing. However, sweetfish returned to the river due to efforts to improve the water quality, the construction of fishways and the release of the animal by fisheries cooperative associations along the river.
