Photo Journal: 'Commodore Perry' takes the plunge

A diver wearing a costume of Commodore Matthew Perry, who arrived in Shimoda with the U.S. Black Ship fleet in 1854, feeds a ray at Shimoda Aquarium in the city of Shimoda, Shizuoka Prefecture, in this recent photo. The 79th Black Ship Festival, which first started in 1934 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the port's opening, will be held in Shimoda from May 18 to 20. The diving event is linked to the festival. The diver wearing a black naval uniform and a hat over a wetsuit swam in a large fish tank with several rays and held a shark which was hiding in the bottom of the pool. (Mainichi)
