N. Korea promises not to conduct unannounced missile launches

NEW YORK (Kyodo) -- North Korea has promised not to engage in activities hazardous to aviation such as unannounced test-firings of missiles, the International Civil Aviation Organization said Thursday.

Pyongyang gave the assurance to senior ICAO officials who visited the country from Monday to Wednesday, it said, adding that the North renewed its request to open a new air route through South Korean airspace.

Last October, the board of the Montreal-based U.N. agency unanimously denounced North Korea for severely threatening the safety of international aviation through its ballistic missile launches.
