KAWAGOE, Saitama -- Three women have acquired full membership at Kasumigaseki Country Club, a golf venue here for the Tokyo 2020 Games that previously restricted full membership to men, the club disclosed on May 11.
According to the club, its administrative board on May 8 agreed to upgrade the three women's weekday membership to full membership status.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) had earlier pointed out that limiting full membership to men conflicted with the Olympic Charter, which bans gender segregation. The club updated its rules and opened the door to women in March last year, in response to an IOC requirement to change its discriminatory practices.
