Photo Journal: 'Go-ing' with tradition

(Mainichi)

Title holder Yuta Iyama, 28, right, plays Go against challenger Keigo Yamashita, 39, during the second game of the 73rd Honinbo Tournament at Nijo Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site, in Kyoto's Nakagyo Ward on May 23, 2018. While Kyoto Mayor Daisaku Kadokawa observed the game, the players wearing traditional clothes faced off in the "Ni-no-ma" hall of the castle, which is designated a national treasure. Iyama placed his first stone on the table at 9 a.m. to start the game. Go was first played in Japan at the castle during the Edo period in 1626 in front of Tokugawa Hidetada, the second shogun of the Tokugawa government. (Mainichi)
