Photo Journal: Towering Totoro

Family members observe a huge sculpture of "Totoro," the main character of animated film "My Neighbor Totoro" in a fallow rice field in the mountains in Hodatsushimizu, Ishikawa Prefecture, on May 25, 2018. Local resident Takashi Yamamoto, 71, began crafting sculptures of Totoro each year for his three elementary school grandchildren in 2014. The 2018 version, which he worked on from the middle of April, is the biggest yet, standing more than 6 meters tall. Yamamoto used round trunks for the base and bamboo for the frame. He then covered the surface with green leaves. He said the leaves will turn brown in a month. Visitors can climb up a ladder inside the sculpture and view the scenery of the town from Totoro's head.
