Earthquake hits Gunma, no major damage reported

An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale hit a central part of Japan including Gunma, Ibaraki, Tochigi and Saitama prefectures at around 3:27 p.m. on June 17, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. No major damage caused by the quake was reported.

The city of Shibukawa in southern Gunma Prefecture experienced a severe tremor measuring lower-5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7, while the cities of Maebashi, Kiryu, Isezaki and Numata in Gunma Prefecture recorded 4 on the same scale, the agency said.

The epicenter of the quake was about 20 kilometers underground in southern Gunma Prefecture, according to the agency.
