Photo Journal: Newly minted moniker

Eurasian otter Mint, top, which was born on March 10, 2018, is seen with her mother Akane at the Noichi Zoological Park of Kochi Prefecture, in the city of Konan, Kochi Prefecture on June 24, after being officially named on the day. The zoo publicly invited names from May to June, and there were 549 entries from inside and outside the prefecture. Mint was chosen because it matches that of her mother Akane, which means madder in Japanese, in that they are both plant names, and her March 10 birthdate, which could be read "mito" in Japanese. The young otter was no bigger than a human hand when she was born but she has since grown to become over 60 centimeters long and weighs 4 to 5 kilograms. Mint has lately become very curious and often chases butterflies. (Mainichi)
