Photo Journal: Burst of color

Visitors look at a rainbow over water pouring through the gates of Kurobe Dam in Tateyama, Toyama Prefecture, on June 26, 2018. The opening of the gates has been an annual tourist attraction since 1961 when the dam began hydropower generation operations. A terrace has been installed to give people a better view of the gushing water. When the gates are opened, some 10 to 15 metric tons of water per second flow from the dam, which has a capacity of about 200 million tons of water, according to the Kansai Electric Power Co. Last year, some 930,000 people visited the dam. The opening of the gates will be held at certain times every day until Oct. 15. (Mainichi)
