INAKADATE, Aomori -- Famous scenes from the movie "Roman Holiday" and anime characters by legendary animator Osamu Tezuka have been creatively designed in paddy fields here, after rice crops in different colors were planted in early June and have reached their peak.
The paddy field artworks were created using 11 varieties of rice crops in seven colors. One of the works portrays Gregory Peck as a reporter and Audrey Hepburn as Princess Anne riding a scooter through the city of Rome while visiting the Mouth of Truth, as well as other scenes from Roman Holiday.
According to the Inakadate Municipal Government, the rice crops are at their best through the middle of August. Viewing platforms for two artworks are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., but the hours will be extended from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. between July 14 and Aug. 31.
Rice field art has been gaining much attention lately, and other municipal governments and organizations around Japan have held similar events to revitalize their regions.
