TOKYO -- Prime Minister Shinzo Abe justified attending a party with ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) legislators on July 5 amid a heavy rain warning for extensive areas of the country.
"The government has taken all possible measures to respond to the situation," the prime minister told a House of Councillors Cabinet Committee session on July 17, expressing his view that there was no problem with the government's initial response to the rain disaster that left more than 210 people dead in 14 prefectures.
Abe said, however, that he warned Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasutoshi Nishimura for tweeting about the details of the party called "Akasaka Jimin-tei" in the Akasaka district of downtown Tokyo. "I told him to be careful about messages he dispatches," the prime minister told the Diet panel session.
