Elementary and junior high school students practice before the all Japan kendo competition for schoolchildren at Nippon Budokan in Tokyo's Chiyoda Ward, on July 24, 2018. Some 5,000 students from 1,000 winning teams that made it through the preliminary rounds participated in the team competition, which is the largest event for young practitioners. Princess Yohko, second daughter of Prince Tomohito of Mikasa, holds a fifth-dan rank in kendo and said at the opening ceremony, "I wish you good luck." Ayumu Ito, 12, who won first prize in the elementary school section of the All Japan kendo boys' training session, said, "I would like to train my mind to be strong." (Mainichi)
