Photo Journal: Off-season snowfall

Visitors enjoy artificially created snow at the Snow and Ice Research Center of the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience, in the city of Shinjo, Yamagata Prefecture, on July 27, 2018. The facility was opened to the public for an annual event for experiencing different varieties of snow. The event has been held during school summer holidays from about 20 years ago to raise awareness about the facility and the research being done there. The facility made artificial snowfall in a large low-temperature experiment room, which is kept at minus 10 degrees Celsius, and made a blizzard at a speed of up to 10 meters per second by using a wind generator with five fans.
