Photo Journal: Guiding lights for peace

People float about 8,000 lanterns on the Motoyasu River in front of the Atomic Bomb Dome in Hiroshima's Naka Ward on Aug. 6, 2018, to pray for peace on the 73rd anniversary of the atomic bombing of the city and to pay tribute to the victims of the blast. Among the lanterns was one on which Japanese actress Non wrote messages and drew pictures. Non performed the heroine's voice for the popular animation movie, "In this Corner of the World," which depicts people in Hiroshima during wartime. Masako Yamato, a 75-year-old housewife in the city's Minami Ward, experienced the A-bomb when she was 2 years old and lost her elder brother, a first grade student of the then Hiroshima Daiichi Junior High School, in the attack. "I feel my brother is waiting for me so I participate in the ceremony every year. I oppose all wars from the bottom of my heart and hope for peace." (Mainichi)
