Photo Journal: The art of plastic pollution

A huge whale art piece created using 5 metric tons of plastic waste is on display outside the Historic Centre of Bruges, Belgium, a World Heritage-listed site. A U.S. design firm created the 12-meter-high "Skyscraper (the Bruges Whale)," that shows a whale jumping out of a canal, a symbol for the district. The artwork has become a popular photo spot with tourists to the area. The design firm collected plastic waste on the beaches of Hawaii, which included a fishery container bearing the word "Ishinomaki," one of the cities in Miyagi Prefecture devastated by the tsunami triggered by the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. The artwork is part of the international art exhibition "Bruges Triennial," which runs through Sept.16, 2018. (Mainichi)
