SAPPORO -- The trend of eating creatively designed parfaits after meals or drinking has been spreading throughout Japan following a wave of Instagram postings of the popular sweet treat that started in this northern city.

People in Hokkaido eat ice cream even in the freezing winter. In recent years, parfait specialty shops which operate late at night opened in Sapporo's downtown Susukino district and have become popular. Moreover, a committee to promote the local food culture was launched in Sapporo in September, 2015.

After two shops in Sapporo expanded their business to Tokyo in 2017, the number of shops that serve parfaits is increasing in Tokyo. Commenting on the trend, committee producer Chiemi Isozaki said, "I didn't expect this move to spread so rapidly. Each shop competes and continues developing its culture of eating parfait. I would like foreign tourists to enjoy these sweet treats."
