Photo Journal: Mourning lights

A boy arranges candles inside of a lantern lit to commemorate the fourth anniversary of a landslide disaster that killed 77 people, in Asaminami Ward of the western Japan city of Hiroshima, on Aug. 20, 2018. The 2014 landslides hit Asaminami and Asakita wards in the city. In the wee hours of the morning, when the disaster original occurred, bereaved families and local residents visited the sites of houses destroyed by the slides and memorial monuments, offering flowers. The disaster was caused by torrential rain that triggered over 100 landslides and destroyed about 400 houses. As 108 people across Hiroshima Prefecture fell victim to the torrential rain that hit western Japan this July, people here continue to consider how to reduce potential damage from natural disasters.
