A volunteer carries a mattress in a house that was struck by an earthquake in the town of Atsuma, Hokkaido, on Sept. 12, 2018. The Atsuma Town Social Welfare Council opened a disaster volunteer center at the former Kashiwa day care facility on Sept. 11 and it is accepting individual volunteers who live in Hokkaido. Applicants must apply in advance by calling 090-7647-6583 (in Japanese). Volunteers are requested to gather at 8:30 a.m. at the center each day for orientation. They will clean up victims' houses, carry heavy loads such as furniture, play with children and support management at evacuation sites, and supply water. The day's work ends at 3 p.m. A total of 110 individuals and nine groups had applied to work as volunteers as of 5 p.m. of Sept. 11. (Mainichi)
