ISTANBUL -- A joint digital team formed by The Mainichi Newspapers Co. and Sports Nippon Newspapers (Sponichi) signed an agreement with Turkish pro sports group Besiktas JK on Sept. 14 to promote the group across Asia.
The Mainichi-Sponichi team will manage branding in Japan for Besiktas -- owner of the Istanbul-based Besiktas soccer club among many other sports franchises -- and Turkish soccer overall. In addition, it will also work with Besiktas JK to promote Japan-Turkey sports exchanges leading up to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics.
Founded in 1903, Besiktas JK is Turkey's oldest professional soccer club, and has won the country's top-tier Super Lig championship 15 times. This year, former national team forward Ilhan Mansiz, who was on the Turkish side that placed third at the 2002 Japan-South Korea World Cup, was named a Besiktas assistant coach.
At a news conference in Istanbul, Besiktas Chairman Fikret Orman told reporters that he would like to work with such venerable media outlets as The Mainichi Newspapers Co. and Sports Nippon Newspapers on many different projects.
