Photo Journal: Blooming against the odds

A florist prepares flowers in his shop damaged by a recent earthquake in the town of Mukawa in southern Hokkaido. Masami Koizumi, 54, reopened his "Hanayoshi Mukawa" shop a day after a 6.7 magnitude quake hit the northernmost prefecture on Sept. 6, 2018, even though the building was leaning and an outside wall had collapsed. The intense jolt caused water pipes to burst, and leaked water made flowers unfit for sale. "The only thing I could do was to protect myself," said Koizumi. He arranged flowers to offer to a well-known funeral company employee who died in the earthquake. Koizumi will move to a temporary shop by the end of September. "I have no choice but to keep working," he added. (Mainichi)
