TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Department store sales in Japan fell 0.2 percent in sales in August from a year earlier on a same-store basis, due partly to dampened demand for autumn clothing amid scorching weather, an industry body said Friday.

The sales of 219 department stores operated by 79 companies stood at around 411.8 billion yen ($3.65 billion). Clothing sales slipped 2.6 percent, down for the second straight month, said the Japan Department Stores Association.

Fewer holidays in the reporting month also dented customer visits, the industry body added.

Sales of tax-free items at 93 outlets jumped 20 percent to 25.8 billion yen.
