TOKYO -- Hugely popular giant panda cub Xiang Xiang will be slowly weaned off her mother at the Ueno Zoological Gardens in Taito Ward here.

From Nov. 13, the facility will start gradually increasing the time for the female cub to spend apart from her mother Shin Shin. The zoo hopes that Xiang Xiang will become completely independent by next month when she will turn 1 1/2 years old after being born in June 2017.

On Nov. 12, the zoo displayed the mother and daughter to the media. Xiang Xiang ate bamboo grass leaves with her mother and showed off her tree climbing skills.
