Kiyotsukyo gorge covered with snow is seen reflected on the surface of a pool of water at a sightseeing spot at the end of Kiyotsukyo Gorge Tunnel in the city of Tokamachi, Niigata Prefecture, on Jan. 1, 2019. The 750-meter tunnel was constructed in 1996 so tourists could enjoy the gorge, which had become inaccessible after a hiking trail at the site was closed due to a fatal accident in 1988. It was sunny on New Year's Day and visiting families enjoyed the beautiful contrast between the white snow and blue sky. The tunnel is scheduled to stay open until Jan. 14. After that, it will be closed for the winter until March 31.
