M6.4 quake hits southwestern Japan, no tsunami warning issued

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 struck off Japan's southwestern Tanegashima Island on Tuesday night, with no tsunami warning issued, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The 9:39 p.m. temblor occurred at a depth of around 30 kilometers under the sea surface, with parts of Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures registering 4 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7, according to the agency.

The agency initially put the quake's magnitude at 5.9, but upgraded it to 6.4.
