Hiromi Tanaka, 37, and her 9-month-old daughter Sakura stare into bamboo lanterns as she prays for the 6,434 victims of the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake, including her relative, at Higashi Yuenchi Park in Kobe's Chuo Ward, in western Japan, in the predawn hours of Jan. 17, 2019. An annual memorial event was held at the park on the day, the 24th anniversary of the disaster that hit Kobe and surrounding cities. About 8,500 lanterns were prepared and participants including people who lost family members offered silent prayers at 5:46 a.m., the time the first jolt occurred. As of 7 a.m., the number of visitors was about 5,500, which is about 1,800 more than last year. Many other private memorial events were also held in the disaster-hit areas.
