Photo Journal: Frisky feathered dance

(Mainichi/Taichi Kaizuka)

A male and female red-crowned crane stretch their wings and perform a mating dance among other cranes and Yezo sika deer in the village of Tsurui in Japan's northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido, on Jan. 25, 2019. The cranes, a national treasure, roost by the Setsuri River and wake up before dawn when the sky starts to brighten. The two birds were preparing to mate on a sandbank as the two Yezo sika deer passed by. Many photographers and tourists have been gathering before daybreak along the Otowa bridge in the village so they can have a bird's-eye view of the cranes.
