Spanish League: Late goal gives 10-man Valencia win over Girona

MADRID (AP) -- A 90th-minute goal by Ferran Torres gave 10-man Valencia a 3-2 win at Girona in the Spanish league on Sunday.

Valencia was trying to hold on to the draw when Torres broke free in a late counterattack to score the winner at Montilivi Stadium in Girona.

The result moved Valencia to sixth place, in the final Europa League spot and six points from the last Champions League position. Getafe, which defeated last-placed Huesca 2-1 on Saturday, is currently fourth.

On Saturday, league leader Barcelona beat Rayo Vallecano 3-1 at Camp Nou Stadium to keep a seven-point gap on second-placed Atletico Madrid, which defeated Leganes 1-0.

Third-placed Real Madrid, coming off three straight losses, visits Valladolid later Sunday.

Girona, which stayed 14th, had won two of its last three matches, including a 2-1 triumph over Real Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium to end a 13-game winless streak in all competitions.

Valencia opened the scoring with Goncalo Guedes in the 14th minute and Jonas Ramalho equalized in the 22nd. Dani Parejo put the visitors ahead again in the 53rd, and Cristhian Stuani evened the match for the second time by converting an 83rd-minute penalty kick awarded after video review.

Torres' winner also was confirmed after video review as the officials checked for a foul early in the play that led to his goal.

Valencia played a man down from the 72nd as defender Facundo Roncaglia was sent off for stopping a breakaway with a foul.

Girona striker Stuani is the league's third-best scorer with 16 goals, behind Lionel Messi (26) and Luis Suarez (17).

Real Betis beat struggling Celta Vigo 1-0 with an 80th-minute winner by Jese Rodriguez, his first goal since joining the Spanish club this season on a loan from Paris Saint-Germain.

The result ended Betis' two-game losing streak and left the team in seventh place, just behind Valencia.

Celta is winless in five straight games, and has lost nine of its last 11 league matches. Celta coach Fran Escriba was hired after Miguel Cardoso was fired last weekend following a 1-0 loss at Eibar.

Celta could drop to the relegation zone if Villarreal wins at Levante later on Sunday.
