Photo Journal: Timely treats

(Mainichi/Saiji Fujita)

Female giant panda cub Saihin tackles heart-shaped ice chunks and carrots, gifts for White Day on March 14, 2019 at the Adventure World theme park in Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture. On this day in Japan, men give women presents in return for the chocolates they received on Valentine's Day, and all five of the facility's female pandas received a special something. The 7-month-old Saihin shared the presents with her 18-year-old mother Rauhin. The cub nuzzled the ice treats and seemed to enjoy touching and licking them. Four-year-old twin sisters Ouhin and Touhin got ice pieces shaped like cherry and peach blossoms, from which their names are derived, respectively. Two-year-old Yuihin received a ribbon-shaped piece of ice, as one of the two kanji characters in her name means "tie."
