TOKYO -- Somei Yoshino cherry blossom season is set to start in the capital on March 21, with the precious pink blooms reaching their peak on March 29, according to private weather company Weather Map Co.
The prefectures of Fukuoka and Kochi in Japan's southwest will edge out Tokyo for the earliest blossoms, estimated to open on March 20. However, peak viewing will arrive a smidge later, on March 31 and 30, respectively.
Those in Japan's northeastern region can expect to see their Somei Yoshino sakura trees in full splendor as soon as April 7, for Fukushima Prefecture, and as late as April 25, in Aomori Prefecture. Trees in the northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido are projected to reach their peak in early to mid-May.
