Ueno zoo's star giant panda cub tops the scales at over 50 kg

TOKYO -- Giant panda cub Xiang Xiang, the star attraction at Ueno Zoological Gardens in Taito Ward here, now weighs more than 50 kilograms.

The facility on April 9 released its latest images of the steadily growing 21-month-old cub as she climbed trees and moved about in her outdoor playground.

According to the zoo, Xiang Xiang weighed 54.2 kilograms as of April 5, up by 4.4 kilograms from a month ago. The giant panda eats bamboo and sleeps about 12 hours a day.

Meanwhile, as it is once again breeding season, Xiang Xiang's father Ri Ri has been displaying aroused behavior, but her mother Shin Shin has shown no interest in mating.
