TOKYO -- A woman and a little girl were killed while eight other people were injured here on April 19 after a car and a garbage truck collided at a pedestrian crossing at about 12:25 p.m., according to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and other sources.
The garbage truck was knocked on its side, and there are reports that some victims were caught under the vehicle when it tipped over.
"There was a young woman covered in blood lying on the ground near the sidewalk," said one 54-year-old witness who told the Mainichi Shimbun that he had run outside when he heard the crash. "It didn't look like she was moving. The garbage truck was on its side, and it looked like the passenger car, a truck, and several other vehicles had collided," he added.
Meanwhile, a worker at a nearby Indian restaurant said, "I could see two women and a man on the ground through the (restaurant) window. I was shocked."
The site is located near Higashi-ikebukuro Station on Tokyo Metro's Yurakucho Line.
