TOKYO -- A primary school with the new era name "Reiwa" is expected to open here in April next year, after two elementary schools run by Nakano Ward merge, it has been learned.

A committee consisting of Kamitakada Elementary School and Arai Elementary School officials, parents, guardians and about 20 local residents had mulled a new name for the merged school, among other tasks. Reiwa was chosen from several names proposed in a meeting held on April 10 due to its popularity, according to the committee.

The name has to be approved in an education board session and by the ward assembly. According to the Nakano Ward Board of Education, the Kamitakada and Arai elementary schools are already preparing for the merger, and both schools will close at the end of March 2020.

Nakano Ward plans to name the newly merged school Reiwa when students first use the Kamitakada Elementary School building. A new building for Riewa elementary school will be completed in April 2022 where the Arai Elementary School building currently stands.
