Japan Photo Journal: Tea'd up for Reiwa

(Mainichi/Ai Kawahira)

Women chosen from among the public pick tea leaves while wearing traditional working clothes at a plantation in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, on May 2, 2019. The "first flush" -- the season's first growth of new leaves -- was reaching its peak, and the picking event was launched both to promote the famed Uji tea brand and to celebrate the first harvest of the Reiwa era. In commemoration of the era change, organizers displayed photographs of Emperor Emeritus Akihito and Empress Emerita Michiko visiting the western Japan city. They also exhibited pictures of Uji tea being presented at the Imperial "Daijosai" (Grand Thanksgiving) ceremony before World War II.
