Takeoff from the toilet: West Japan airport cubicles given cockpit makeover

The new aircraft-themed interior of one of the refurbished cubicles at the terminal is seen in this photo provided by Kounotori Tajima Airport Terminal.

TOYOOKA, Hyogo -- A toilet cubicle at Kounotori Tajima Airport terminal has been fitted out with eye-catching cockpit style wallpaper as part of a renovation here.

One of two male toilet cubicles and one of four female cubicles have had their interiors tricked out with cockpit wallpaper, which is based on the view from inside an ATR 42-600 turboprop passenger plane, made by Airbus SE.

A blue sky vista, flight controls, gauges and meters give patrons a taste of the pilot's life. Along with the cockpit cubicle, the airport's renewal has seen all the toilets updated to western-style facilities. Diaper changing stations and baby chairs have also been introduced.

Kounotori Tajima Airport's head technical officer Tatsuya Kuwatari, in charge of the renovation, stated, "I hope people come to Tajima Airport and get a sense of what it's like to be a pilot."
